Ten Years Cancer-Free: Running It Back
In January of 2016, I was diagnosed with testicular cancer.
I was 26, working in DC and pursuing a Navy pilot commission, and in the span of a few months, that path was gone. Within weeks, I underwent a radical orchiectomy, followed by a second surgery after my biopsy results came back. Throughout my diagnosis, treatment, and recovery, I leaned heavily on Livestrong’s resources to understand what I was facing, make informed decisions, and start making sense of survivorship. While recovering from my second surgery, I made a promise to myself: I would turn the hardest year of my life into something I could be proud of.
That promise led me to the New York City Marathon – a goal that, at the time, felt almost impossible. I joined Team Livestrong, raised more than $5,000, and found a way to give back to the organization that had helped carry me through treatment. On November 6, 2016, I crossed the finish line, and something in me shifted. Running became more than a sport; it became the way I reclaimed my story. Cancer had changed my life, but it would not take away the part of me that chases dreams. What once felt like the end of one dream became the starting line for another.
This November, ten years after my diagnosis, I am returning to the New York City Marathon with Team Livestrong.
I'm running for the person I was in that hospital bed, and for everyone currently in the middle of their own hardest year. Funds raised support Livestrong’s free programs, including:
- Fertility support for young adults facing cancer who hope to build a family one day
- Livestrong at the Y, which helps survivors regain strength and confidence after treatment
- Ellis, Livestrong’s AI service connecting people to trusted information when they need it most
