Cancer Survivors Need Your Support Now More Than Ever

I’ve committed to raising funds for LIVESTRONG to support people navigating cancer at every stage — patients, survivors, and their loved ones. Funds raised help provide critical, free programs like fertility support for young adults facing cancer who hope to build a family one day; the LIVESTRONG at the Y program, which offers fitness and wellness classes at YMCAs to help survivors regain strength and confidence after treatment; and Ellis, Livestrongs AI service that connects individuals to trusted information, and resources, when they need it most.

I hope you’ll join me in making a meaningful impact for those affected by cancer. Would you consider supporting my journey by making a donation today? Every gift — big or small — helps ensure these vital programs remain free and accessible.

Thank you for being part of this mission and for standing with me as I take on this challenge.

LIVESTRONG’s love and mine,

Genevieve Bates

My Why

Wednesday 1st Jul
When I first decided I wanted to run a marathon, my dream was simple: I wanted my very first 26.2 miles to be at Walt Disney World.
Disney has always been a place that inspires me. The stories, the optimism, the reminder that ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary things - it felt like the perfect setting for such a meaningful milestone.
Like thousands of other runners, I entered the registration process hoping for a spot. And like many others, I didn't get one.
At first, I was disappointed. I had pictured exactly how I wanted my first marathon to happen. But sometimes the plans we make for ourselves aren't the ones we're meant to follow.
Not long after, I discovered the opportunity to run the Walt Disney World Marathon with Livestrong. Looking back, I don't think missing registration was bad luck at all. It gave me the chance to run for something much bigger than myself.
Cancer has touched my family in more ways than one.
My mom has faced breast cancer twice with incredible strength and resilience. Years earlier, my grandmother lost her battle with brain cancer. And only a month after I started fundraising for Livestrong, our family received another diagnosis when my other grandmother was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. Thankfully, it was caught early and she has already undergone surgery to remove it, and radiation is the next step in her treatment. We are incredibly grateful it was found early, but hearing the word "cancer" never gets easier.
As a hospital Pharmacist, I also see the effects of cancer from another perspective. I care for patients every week whose lives have been changed by diagnoses they never expected. Behind every treatment plan, medication, and every hospital stay is a person with hopes, fears, families, and dreams that suddenly look very different.
Running has always challenged me physically. Training for this marathon will teach me perseverance, discipline, and resilience. But this race has become about something far greater than crossing the finish line.
It's about honoring the people I love.
Supporting patients who are still fighting.
Helping ensure that no one has to face cancer alone.
Every training run reminds me that 26.2 miles will be difficult, it is a challenge I get to choose. So many people facing cancer don't get that choice. If my miles can help provide support, resources, and hope for even one person navigating that journey, then every early morning, every sore muscle, and every long run will be worth it.
I still get to chase my dream of running my first marathon at Disney.
The difference is that now, every mile means so much more.
